Hawaii Five-O reaction post (Steve Chun)

Media is a product of it creators and the period it was created in. The first episode of Hawaii Five-O clearly shows us the political and social climate that American writers and producers were working under in the 1960's. Anxiety over the spread of Communism in Asia and other parts of the world, coupled with the social revolution occurring in America itself, permeates the content and style of this program's pilot episode.

Steve McGarrett, a "no nonsense" kind of tough guy, personifies the post-war, hard-working law man that many Americans probably thought was needed to protect society and fight communism. However, he also plays to the counter-culture base with his good looks, soft demeanor around women, and sensitivity to other points of view (especially when they come from a beautiful asian 'hippie').

The first episode's plot perfectly captures the mood of 1968 and the many fears that Americans had concerning politics and technology. It is no coincidence that the Chinese are the primary enemy in this episode. However, the fact that one of the "Intelligence" agents turns out to be a traitor also highlights the feeling that we could not trust many of the people in our government. McGarrett works for the governor of Hawaii; however, he is still very much his own boss. The governor himself points this out when he sarcastically says that sometimes he is not sure who works for who. So, while out hero may be a government worker, he can also pass as a vigilante - someone who is able to take the law into their own hands without pause or consequence.

The centrality of a mysterious, 'futuristic' torture machine that breaks men in mere hours shows us that American audiences and producers are quite aware of the amazing speed at which technology was (and still is) advancing. WWII and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are not too far in the past, a meager 20 years, and Five-O plays on our anxieties over technology in the wrong hands and the harm it could do to America. The Cuban missile crisis certainly played into the content of this episode, and although the players and weapons are different, both of the scenarios could have been disastrous for America.

Hey Everyone, I'm Serena! I was born and raised in Honolulu but lived in New York for most of 2010 and just got back home in December. It DOES feel good to be back, though. :)

I'm a Journalism major with a minor in Writing, and I have just about a year left before graduating so I'm hoping for a great one!

I was born and raised in Honolulu, HI. I went to the icy corn flats of Beloit, Wisconsin for college and spent a year in China after graduation teaching English to university students. The job market and worsening economy convinced me to return home for graduate school and get my masters in a burgeoning field, like Communication.
I enjoy studying film, television, history, and anything to do with these fields. I'm currently writing my thesis on Japanese films and the changing portrayal of the samurai figure in Japanese cinema.

Aloha, my name is Pete. I live in Makiki on Punchbowl Crater. I've been teaching at HPU for several years. I like the downtown location. My great grandfather was a fireman on Fort Street Mall, so I have a bit of nostalgia for the area. Previous to teaching at HPU, I was the Gallery Director for the Hawaii State Art Museum on Hotel Street and Richards. The museum is free, so you should check it out. This is also the site of the very first Royal Hawaiian Hotel (1872).

I've taught at a few Universities. I taught at the University of Hawaii, where I was the first Director of the Academy for Creative Media. Prior to that I taught at USC School of Cinematic Arts and UC Santa Barbara Film Studies Department. That's my teaching stuff in a nut shell. I also enjoy writing in a few different genres, including the novel, graphic novel, screenplays, critical analysis of media, etc... I've written and produced for radio, television, cinema, corporate communications and for the gaming industry.

I also enjoy painting, photography, and visual design in general.

I coach sports (mostly juniors) like golf, basketball, tennis, racquetball, soccer and squash. I also love to bodysurf and hang out with my family.

Big History:
Hawaii’s Big Island has preserved its history and Hawaii culture, and this can be explored at its many national parks and museums. Take a minute to chat with the locals, with Big Island colourful history; many residents have a story to tell.
Local resident Uncle Frankie told the story of an ancient Hawaiian god Pele. “She is the volcano goddess that lives in Kilauea Volcano.”

Big Volcanoes:
Pele continues to display her power today, keeping Kilauea in a constant state of eruption since 1983. “You can fly over and see her in action,” Frankie adds, “in January you can see the red lava seeping into the ocean. That’s pretty amazing to see.”

With its myriad activities and attractions, Big Island has become a major lure for tourists to the Hawaiian Islands. HPU Zora Vlckova ranked No. 9 in the Nation

The young, petite Chec Republican sits in the corner of the university café with her backpack full of tennis rackets and books, and a huge smile plastered on her. This image could summaries Zora Vlckova who has been juggling her tennis career with schooling most of her life, “I started playing when I was 10 years old. My parents didn’t push me into tennis, I just started.” Now ranked nine in the Nation, Vlckeoa is starting the peak of her career, moving up three positions from last year.
“Now we are playing the most important matches of the season.” Next week the teams travel to Phoenix to play in the PacWest tournament, Vlckova said, “We have been working really hard so we should make it to the finals and then we’ll see.” A modest Vlckova added, “We won most of our matches. We lost only to the best team in the nation. We are doing really well.”
The tennis superstar has gone from strength to strength, “previously I played international tournaments and got great rankings.” Vlckova is in the middle of the most difficult part of the season, “… March we have a tough schedule. We play almost everyday.” Vlckova added, “I think we have done a great job and worked really hard. I hope we keep it up for the rest of the season.”
The humble player said that taking loses aren’t that difficult, “It makes me work harder and motivates me.” It may also be because Vlckova doesn’t loose very often. The most recent was to Sona Norakova in Las Vegas, “We’ve known each other all our lives. I’ve played her many times.”
Vlckova made a good decision taking up this competitive sport, holding a strong position as the Nations 9th singles position. “Tennis is getting very famous and competition is getting tougher and tougher.” Some of Vlckova’s success can be dedicated to her Coaches, “Coach Stefan and the assistant Coaches are great. They keep good attitude in the team.” Vlckeoa has learnt a lot since starting at HPU, “I chose to play tennis because it is an individual sport… Since playing at HPU I’ve learnt to play with a team and motivate people,” Vlckova said.
After moving to Hawaii two years ago, Vlckeoa received a tennis scholarship and began her degree in International Business and Finance. Her 21st birthday is on the horizon and a look into Vlckova’s future goals, “when I graduate in 2 years I’m not sure what I will do. I think I will always play tennis. It will always be apart of my life.”

The main event fight did not live up to the name Rumble at Roosevelt. While Vili Fonokalafi, K1 veteran, was light on his feet while extending hard, undefended kicks and punches, his opponent Otto Ho’opi’i was too passive. Ho’opi’i had lost to Fonokalafi about three years ago but surprisingly didn’t bring the heat and passion for revenge.

It did not look like an even match up. Ho’opi’i did not portray himself as a main event competitor and failed to live up to his nickname printed on the pink shirt he wore: “Da Tiger Shark.”

It was obvious who the winner was. The audience started filing out of Roosevelt’s gym even before the winner was announced.

Tribal War Events, headed by Lionel ___, hosted its first event at Roosevelt High School’s gym on April 3.

Kalae McShane, 16, had the support of his fellow Roosevelt classmates as he took on Brenon Nash in what was perhaps the most interesting fight of the evening. It was surprising to see McShane with his surname tattooed on his chest considering he’s only a junior. However, his age was not reflected in his experience and skills.

Many of McShane’s classmates were yelling, “Lick this faka, Kalae. Look him, he scared.” McShane did just that. When Nash hit the floor the crowd yelled, “This faka get nothin!” Although his talent surprised the unfamiliar audience, those who knew McShane were confident in his skills.

Rumble at Roosevelt was proud to host children’s kickboxing, as well. Many in the audience laughed as they went at each other swinging the whole way – all heart, no stop. Joey Quitog showed some definite skill in his win against Spike Kahalewai. He waited patiently for the opportunity to strike rather than just swinging.

At such a young age, it is important to make both fighters feel like winners. However, there was only one draw in the lighter weight classes. It was good to see the kids showing good sportmanship. It was surprising to see Quitog and Kahalewai exchange hugs after their intense stare-down between rounds one and two.

Hinano Higa, Roosevelt High School’s girls basketball coach, received a check for $1500 from Tribal War for Roosevelt’s athletic department. Roosevelt athletes in the audience cheered as the ring girls handed Higa the check.

The intermission show will probably be stuck in the minds of the audience for a long time. Everyday Heroes performed wearing angel wings, and had the audience sarcastically yelling, “Hana hou.”

Many in the audience were saying, “They have to be on something if they’re performing like that.”

During intermission, Uproar counted over 20 children under the age of 5.

Rumble at Roosevelt was meant to be a family event, and for the most part it was. Lionel had to remind the audience to keep the language and sportsmanship clean, but there were a lot of families having a good time.

I recently heard of wikileak.org, an organization which is "A place for journalists, truth tellers, and whistle blowers to leak (publish) personal accounts and evidence of injustice or illegal activity completely anonymously, ..."

Now what made this website so interesting was that it had obtained a decrypted video of the slaying of 12 dozen Iraqi civilians by a U.S air support. 2 Reuters reporters were also killed on the scene. The video is a lengthy one but it is well worth the time to check out. I do warn you that it is a bit graphic. It seems the chopper gunner is having a field day going to town on the civilians with his 50 caliber bullets.

I have always known that in a war there will always be civilian casualties but i am lost for words after seeing the video myself. Normally i write quite lengthy blogs but can't find the right mindset to continue to write this blog.

One point i must bring up though is that at some part of the video you will see that the air support continues to shoot at the people who are down. According to the Geneva convention for the rules of engagement i have found that once a perceived target is down and can no longer fight he is no longer a target and is protected by the Geneva convention. The person must then be provided with the proper medical care and be treated humanely. Before i say anything judgmental i must stop myself. It is up to you to decide for yourself what is right or wrong and whether the actions were justified and on top of everything necessary.

Wikileaks needs donations to continue running so if you have a bunch of dollars lying around try to donate to them but it's no pressure for broke college students to try to keep them running ok.

i wish i had more things that were funny to say and put one or two insensitive comments to make light of the situation but i really can't but for the sake of the booze blog tradition i leave you with this:

Hawai’i was so proud to be one of the few cities to have two newspapers in circulation. The journalism industry is already dwindling. However, when the Honolulu Star Bulletin bought out the Honolulu Advertiser this month, locals in the industry really felt the effects.

Journalism students at HPU were able to hear from Christina Failma, a Pacific Business News photojournalist, about how to prepare for the changing future of journalism.

Failma, an HPU alumna with a BA in Advertising and Public Relations (ADPR) and Communications, has been a fighter through all the changes in the industry. A 2007 graduate from HPU, Failma worked for the Kalamalama as a writer and online content editor.

“I thought it was interesting to hear someone’s opinion on the industry from someone who graduated from HPU,” Riana Stellburg, a photojournalism and graphic design major, said.

While at HPU, Failma interned at the HickamKukiniin June 2005 as a writer and photographer. She also interned at theHonolulu Advertiser and after graduating worked there as a reporter, photographer, video journalist, and photo desk technician.

Journalism students in Jenny Lundahl’s publication design class were fortunate to hear her insight. Failma took it upon herself to tell the students her perspective on the changing journalism industry.

“I think that the change it’s experiencing is going to make it better. We as journalists just have to catch up,” Thomas Obungen, an ADPR major, said.

Failma explained that the industry was dwindling, but also encouraged the students to make themselves more valuable to potential employers by expanding their skills and finding internships.

“The journalist who knows how to do video, audio and websites will be chosen over the journalist who only knows how to write,” Stellburg said.

Failma gave the students hope even though the industry is having a hard time. She gave important tools to the students, as well.

Obungen said, “I think although she painted a somber picture of the current state of the industry, she was very frank with us and that was valuable to our class.”

Stellburg added, “She’s like an angel of hope.”

"Re-use, recycle, re-think":HPU hosts Sustainable Fair

HPU’s Green Group held a “sustainable fair”- Feb. 24 on Fort Street Mall, bringing together local businesses and organizations with HPU organizations to promote a more sustainable future the community.
The specific aim of the day was to “promote and achieve a more sustainable downtown campus,” said HPU Green Club President Theresa Freund, who admitted that this is a “huge challenge,” even at a university where most people are philosophically committed to sustainability.
“HPU is yet to have a successful recycling system,” Freund said, as she explained her vision for a sustainable future, which includes “recycling, a plastic free campus, efficient air conditioning, and reduced energy consumption.”
Freund added that Green Group’s vision “…is to assist the university with a transition into more sustainable practices.”
The Green Club is struggling to be recognized for its efforts, Freund said, and she admitted her hope that through this fair the group will gain the attention of students and staff alike.
Rhiannon Carasco, Green Group secretary said “One of the main things we are trying to do is get a full time staff member who focuses on sustainability.”
Fort Street Mall was a shower of green colors as, posters dappled the street showing ways individuals can help create a sustainable campus. “There is so much HPU downtown campus can do,” Carasco added. “A good recycling system would help dramatically; we don’t even have places in our class rooms to put our plastic bottles.”
Young students such as Kamaha’o Wirght, from Hakipu’u Learning Centre, enjoyed the day and also helped with their school display. He credits hands-on experiments with teaching him how to take care of the environment. “We go up to the mountains to learn about the environment, and down to the ocean, and swim, and plant seaweed,” Wirght said, adding that he preferred this style of learning. “It is really interesting.”
More than 13 businesses and organizations participated in the fair. Ivory McClintock, volunteer Coordinator at Blue Planet Foundation, which aims to make Hawai’i a global leader for energy independence within a decade, promotes ways students can save money while being more environmentally friendly. McClintock said she believes “our mission is to end the fossil fuel use in Hawaii and rely on clean, renewable and indigenous sources. All of which we have here.”
David Santisteven of Leaf Hawaii also attended the fair. “Leaf Hawai’i aims to create Food Systems that connect at-risk populations with affordable, nutritious food, and enable them to grow their own food wherever possible,” said Santisteven. His advice to students was to remember that “the earth can provide enough for everyone’s need, not everyone’s greed.”

i knew this merge would happen eventually. i don't really want it to happen because of all of the highly possible repercussions. however, i'd rather have the star bulletin take over the honolulu advertiser than the other way around. honolulu was a city truly lucky to have 2 newspapers...there are very very few cities who can say the same thing. i thought for sure that the honolulu advertiser would buy out the star bulletin because they seem to be more financially stable. so this came as a surprise to me. a bittersweet surprise i suppose.

thinking about the drawbacks to this merge now. businesses must be worried that ad space will become more expensive than it already is. and for the consumer, i'm sure prices will rise for the daily paper. even though "no one" really buys the newspaper anymore... i get a lot of my news online, and i'm interested to see how the layout will change. i'm so used to the honolulu advertiser website...

i notice that when i'm at school, i'll buy the star bulletin (not the advertiser) because the layout of the pages and the pictures are so much better.

i don't know a lot about this merge or sale yet...but i'm going to continue to read up on it!

A Joke.

It started off as a joke really, coming to Hawaii. I was a student getting by hardly ever concentrating on school. I had previously flunked a law degree, something i worked hard to get in but just decided i didn't have the discipline or heart to follow anymore. Hell's already full of lawyers and politicians. So i had transferred courses to do communications and instead of going to the U.K to finish up my law degree I was in a program that required me to continue my education in the United States. When i was ready to transfer out of my previous university i was going through a list of universities that i could transfer to. I had always set my sights on California or New York but i'm not a huge fan of the cold. I'm from where it's tropical all year round mostly. Now where was I? I'm sorry i get sidetracked sometimes. Yea. So i was going through the list and saw Hawaii Pacific University and I asked my adviser, and i quote "Is Hawaii Pacific in Hawaii?". She said yes.

I left the office that day and the thought was playing in my mind. Friends would then ask me where i was going to transfer and I would always say Hawaii. Everyone would laugh at me "You barely even get by here how do you think you're going to graduate in Hawaii?". I would laugh with them but then i couldn't find a reason not to come to Hawaii. It's got weather i was used to, it's got great beaches, and women walk around half naked.I was sold. Next thing i knew i was sending in an application(I also sent in an application to Harvard. They have yet to reply) and a few days later i got an e-mail saying i was in. I had less than two months to prepare to leave in time for the fall semester of '08. I packed my stuff said goodbye to everyone. Kissed my mum goodbye. I still remember her wrinkly skin. Damn, women don't age well. Gave my dad a hug. I didn't cry. No i didn't. Well maybe a little. We're all human right?

Fast forward a year and a half later and i'm graduating soon. I've had the best times of my life. I've added crazier stories to my already full library of crazy stories. I've made the best of friends here which i will hold dear to me till the day i die. I've fallen in love here *sigh*. I've broken hearts *sigh*. I've drunk enough alcohol that the blood in my system has been replaced with it. Americans have taught me 101 ways to open a beer bottle and also learned beer pong, a national pastime.

I think more importantly Hawaii has taught me to be independent. I've learned to do my laundry by myself and buy my own groceries. I've learned to do the dishes otherwise they pile up and cause an odor that stinks up the apartment. I've learned to clean up after myself. This might sound like normal day to day stuff but I'm excited to these things. As I've always had a my mum or a maid to do all this for me. I kinda know how a tiger that was born in captivity and then released in the wild to fend for himself feels now. That's why Hawaii to me will always be something i hold dear to myself. It's funny how what started of as a joke has turned into something that is one of the most beautiful experiences of my life-this journey into adulthood.

Annabelle is rather extraordinary. Born and raised in Australia, she is accustomed to life down under. But, as ironic as it sounds, she's been mid-air most of her life, Show-Jumping her horses 24-7 from the time she could ride, up until she discovered a new love. Traveling horse-back eventually made the transition from passion to hobby as Annabelle decided to travel by air and foot in and all around South America. Being in countries like Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Uruguay, Annabelle enjoyed the sites and life on the road, gradually ending up in Hawai'i, where she got accepted into the international student program here at HPU.
When asked about her experience around the world that she's seen and been a part of, Annabelle giggles, shrugs her shoulders and says "it's been a thrilling ride, but it isn't over." She winks and smiles while I search for more questions, knowing there's more to pry about. Hawaii's premier entertainment company, X-1 World Events, is bringing world-renowned comedian and actor Eddie Griffin to the Islands on Feb. 12-14 as the stand-up comic will be appearing in Kona, Honolulu, and Maui, respectively. Known for their world class fight and entertainment events, X-1 is proud to present a comic of Griffin's stature to Island comedy fans. Other local comedians, Blane "Champ" Kaneshiro and Kaleo Pilanca, will be featured.

Perhaps best-known for his roles in the Rob Schneider "Deuce Bigalow, Male Gigolo" comedy films, Eddie was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and was voted class clown three years in a row in high school. By the age of 16, he was choreographing the Kansas City Chiefs halftime shows. One night, a couple of friends dared him to perform at the local comedy club. He was originally supposed to be on stage for three minutes, but instead performed off-the-cuff for 45 minutes successfully.

Soon developing a personal style reminiscent of such classic comedians as Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx, Griffin gained further exposure in a series of impromptu performances at Los Angeles' popular Comedy Store. After only two short months in Los Angeles, Griffin was chosen to open for Andrew Dice Clay at Madison Square Garden, which kicked off a 22-city tour.

This film,] was really well thought out. I think it kept focus on what was actually going during the time of the overthrow of the monarch, and the events leading up to it. I really appreciate the view, as well as the way it was put together. The piece focused on the main point, which was largely to educate the viewer on how Hawai'i became what it is today, and how some of the locals view their island, and their state. Not just the state annexed to the nation of the United States of America, but the living conditions, the ideology, and the mentality of the people concerning what happened to their ancestors, their monarchy, and their land.
One of the speakers in the film, Haunani-Kay Trask, was probably a voice I've heard before seeing the film, which helped when trying to understand what exactly was happening and why they were saying what they were saying in the documentary.
The film starts with discussing the earliest contacts between the Hawaiians and foreigners in the time of Captain James Cook and his crews onboard the ships the Discovery and the Resolution. From there, they begin to talk about the coexisting of the missionaries and other "Haole" people that was initiated in the encounters between the Hawaiians and the foreigners. Looking toward the coexistence between the then Hawaiian Monarch and the Americans, people like Queen Emma, King David Kalakaua, and Queen Liliuokalani strove to try and establish not only peace, but also treaties with the foreigners to share land and resources between respective governments.
With plenty of details in between each of the attempts at peace, things went terribly wrong when certain American officials decided that peace was not in the best interests of American ambitions concerning Hawaii and it's people. As soon as an opportunity presented itself, certain American conspirators decided to overthrow Queen Liliuokalani (the representative of the Monarch at the time) and her rule by illegally imprisoning her in her own palace, and taking control of the government.
In response, I was very irritated with this story/history of the Hawaiian islands. Why? Because this is similar to what happened to my home, the Marianas Island of Guam. The Americans took the land, only there was no annexation to anything but told we were to become a territory, a piece of land to be owned by a country we didn't welcome with open arms. Liberation, into another form of slavery. Responding is similar to being slapped in the face and then asked immediately after "How does it feel?" In short, I know how it feels.

An Eventful First Friday

Last First Friday was a milestone in the art renaissance of Chinatown, Honolulu. People came out in droves to see the Chinese New Year celebration along side the simultaneous art walk that was happening. Also, it was the the first time the newly renovated artist lofts were available for open house. Hotel Street was the most concentrated I have ever seen with party goers. I looked in to Smith's Union Bar which is normally empty, to see it completely filled. Vagrants and homeless were interspersed with the crowd who spilled out into the street.

It was a special night for me because not only was I doing my gig in Chaplain Lane earlier that evening where I take part in a flea market entitled Shop, Bop, and Grind, but also because one of Hip Hop's founding fathers was in attendance down the street at Next Door. D.J. Kool Herc, who is given credit for making Hip Hop breaks popular in the late 70's-early 80's, performed to a full capacity. Most of the crowd had no idea who he was, but for myself, who is a Hip Hop head (enthusiast), it was bliss.

Last First Friday will be heralded as the night Chinatown's scene opened up to a larger audience, combining multiple festivities and ultimately helping its popularity and success.

An Act of War

Being from Hawai'i, this really hit home hard. I am not Hawaiian, but I still feel a strong tie to the islands. And, in this sense, I do feel like I'm Hawaiian. I have learned about Hawaiian history and culture, and I must say that I love it. The Hawaiian movement is still prevalent today - there are protests all the time, and I constantly see this grudge native Hawaiian's hold. I am fortunate enough to be accepted by them because I have lived here my whole life. While I think it unfair what happened to Hawai'i, I also think that these native Hawaiian's are a bit too extreme sometimes.

Professor Britos was right, there are resonances that remain in Hawai'i today regarding the overthrow of the monarchy and Queen Lilioukalani. I think it's a good thing though - this shows me that the Hawaiian people have not forgotten their heritage and history. The formal apology issued by Hilary Clinton was not enough. The hurt and memory of the overthrow remains in the culture of the Hawaiian people forever. It's like saying, "I'm so sorry for causing the almost annihilation of your race and ruining your culture forever." "An Act of War" made me really emotional, actually. The way it depicted the overthrow of the monarchy was heartbreaking.

At the beginning of the movie they interchanged the beauty of natural Hawai'i with commercialized Hawai'i (neon signs, exotic drinks, Waikiki beach/tourists). I thought that was so ironic - but it's sad to say that Hawai'i thrives on the tourist industry. I always wonder what it would have been like if I lived in a Hawai'i that was more based on its older culture of simplicity. I almost cried when they showed protesters being arrested. The line: "It's our way of life...We are not Americans. We will die Hawaiians. We will never be Americans" is so true. They had their way of life taken away from them. I think they are a little bit extreme saying they will never be Americans, but that just shows how deep the hurt goes.

It was sad to see how the Hawaiian population diminished when foreigners started arriving bringing diseases. I got quite upset when the narrator quoted a foreigner: "Can these be human beings?" - referring to the native Hawaiians. How could people be so closed minded and judgmental?

The US wanted Hawai'i for military reasons, and that was smart of them - Hawai'i is excellently located in the Pacific. However, the means they went about doing their business was so rude. The Hawaiians tried so hard to maintain their government/power/culture, but it was no use. America had better weapons and more soldiers, so they were able to take Hawai'i by force. As I was watching this film, I thought about how I would react to a foreign power trying to take over my government and way of life. I would have been so discouraged, so I imagine the moral of the native Hawaiians was almost nonexistent.

Queen Lilioukalani is one of my favorite people - a role model if you will. She was so intelligent and talented. She kept her composure amidst all that was going on around her. She wanted a new constitution for her people, and I was upset when the rest of her advisors feared America and refused to help her with the new constitution. America really knows how to strike fear into the hearts of people. Lilioukalani was so patient though. Regarding the new constitution she proposed she talked of "patience, peace, and waiting for another time."

I asked myself the question: "Was Hawai'i stolen?" YES! I think it was stolen. It was stolen from the people. Not only Hawai'i...but territories like Guam, Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Wake. When the US finally took over Hawai'i and overthrew the monarchy, the Hawaiians were prohibited from supporting the Queen. What kind of people would force natives to turn against their own? How primitive. It also bothered me how in the film, America would draw their political cartoons and ridicule Queen Lilioukalani. Their racist, physical, sexist jokes were not appreciated in my eyes.

The ending of the film was the most sad. America claimed that Hawai'i was now a part of the land of the free and the home of the brave. Lies! When America took over Hawai'i, there was no freedom - they couldn't speak the language, they were looked down based on the color of their skin. It was terrible. Hawai'i became America's battlefield and playground. One woman at the end said, "We are the homeless, the poor, uneducated, and we fill the prisons." That's so true. If I go into any more detail I might start crying.

The music they played at the beginning of the film was a commercialized song about Hawai'i. I think it was Elvis's "Blue Hawai'i." I think that really brought out the irony because Hawai'i to natives is seen as a beautiful place - the aina is their home...their life. At the end of the film, they played a song sung totally in Hawaiian. The lyrics at the bottom of the screen were so heart-wrenching. I think the song choice in the beginning was perfect to set the mood for the film - to in a sense bring people to the side of Hawai'i. Also, the song at the end of the film really hit it home. The words were so beautiful - even if I can't fully understand Hawai'i. It kind of shows the beauty of the Hawaiian culture - the beauty that is slowly dying because of what happened so many years ago.

Hello, my name is Ryan Erik Lam. I was born and raised on Oahu. I attended and graduated from Kamehameha Schools. Though a double major in Accounting and Video Production, I am set to graduate early. It is due in part to my crazy schedule, as I am taking seven courses this semester. I hope to have a career that utilizes both degrees. I see myself working in Los Angeles in the very near future. I have made a wide variety of videos ranging from commercials, public service announcements, music videos, documentaries, news broadcasts, and short feature films. In addition, I have worked on the set of a number of productions both in Hawaii and in Los Angeles. One of the most notable productions I have been a part of is ABC’s TV show LOST. My experience in video and film include directing, cinematography, and editing among other areas.

I live in Ala Moana with a Japanese girl from HPU. I moved here last month, and I really like it. This is my first time to have roommate, but it is fun and good more than I expected. Since I moved here I cook a lot, and I love to cook.

I’m active, and love to challenge new things. I’m going to run great Aloha run on February 15, so I’m jogging every other day. I also practice swimming. Mike Ang originates from Singapore and moved to Hawaii in 2000.

My name is Annabelle Beale and I am an International Exchange student from Australia. I came to Hawaii apart of an exchange offered to Deakin University students as a cultural program. It is really interesting immersing yourself into various cultures that are so differnt to your own.

Recently I backpacked around South America, travelling to incredibly different countries such as Argentina, Boliva, Peru, Equador and Uruquay. Each country so different to my own were somtimes scaring but always thrilling. Whilst travelling with my sister (picture) we saw some amazing things and met some even more amazing people. One of the best experience was reaching Macchi Pichu after a 4 day hike, over 4 mountains, thousands of steps, a few tumbles and heaps of blisters.

At home I am studying Media and Communications and majoring in Journalism. In my spare time I am a florist, compete in showjumping comeptitions and instruct young riders.

I have been in Hawaii for the past year and a half sometimes i forget that it's for school and not partying. Old habits die hard. I love to laugh and make people laugh. I might not always be in class because i'm "sick", or my grandmother died for the 3rd time or i'm getting treatment for cervical cancer but i'm always present in mind and soul just maybe not body. Aloha, my name is Pete. I've been at HPU teaching for a couple of years now. I like the downtown location, my great grandfather was a fireman on Fort Street Mall. Previous to teaching at HPU, I was the Gallery Director for the Hawaii State Art Museum right down the street. Capitol Building No. 1 is also the site of the very first Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
Before that I taught at the University of Hawaii Academy for Creative Media, UH Communications, UH English, and before that at USC School of Cinematic Arts and UC Santa Barbara Film Studies Department. That's my teaching stuff in a nut shell. I also enjoy writing in a few different genres, including the graphic novel, screenplays, critical analysis of media, blogging... I've written and produced radio, TV, corporate communications and for the gaming industry.
I also enjoy painting, graphic design, visual design in general and other visual media such as cinema and CGI.
I coach sports like golf, basketball, tennis, racquetball, soccer and squash. Now days I limit myself to coaching mostly junior sports.

On Friday November 27^th one of the worlds greatest athletes so called hit the wall with problems. He was reported to have driven his Cadillac over a fire hydrant and into a tree in the early wee hours of the night. I mean that happens to people, but what made it even more interesting was that this all happened in his street just after pulling out of his driveway. Also to make it more interesting his wife supposedly came chasing with a golf club and did some damage to Tigers car after he had already hit a hydrant and tree. This definitely leads to some suspicion of what exactly was going on that night with the two of them.Rumors around say Tiger was having an affair and his wife Elin found out that night. Not even a week later, six girls came out and said that they had recently “been with” Tiger. Now a few days later, Tigers 14^thalleged mistress came out, and supposedly was with Tiger before and after he got married and is in her 40’s. If even one of these affairs are true, it’s a crying shame and bummer for Tiger. Now Tiger has lost some a few sponsors, and has dropped out of the PGA but still has Nike and Tag Huer supporting him. 3D Films- Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

I think that it is neat to hear that there were 3D films back in the 50’s. And because it is an actual 3D image being filmed it comes out to be a better show. The technology has come a long way since the multi-projector 3D imagining, newer and better technology allows the viewer to enjoy the feature without eye strain.

The movie was amazing to watch I liked the lab scenes the most. All of the motion that is going on at the same time created a fascination from scene to scene. The clarity of the picture at the speed of which the action and characters were moving made it different and unique from other animated movies. The entire movie was interesting; although I do enjoy a good animated movie. The animation all the way around was clear and precise. Good story line and jokes, I enjoyed watching the club or restaurant scene where your plate is held in the air and you waited for your food to fall from the sky. There was food constantly falling around the characters; all that food falling from the sky as though it is a normal day to day event. It is very interesting to find out in depth that most 3D movie involves filming two images simultaneously sometimes with cameras positioned side by side.

Ice Cold

High up in northern Sweden in a town called Jukkasjärvi lies a hotel that marks its 20th celebration this season. The ice hotel in Jukkasjävi started up when clients of a tourist agency was told that the hotels in the area was fully booked, but that they could sleep in the snow house. The temperature was at a low -5 celcius so after survival training from the owners, the happy campers set out to sleep in the snow house. The day after, the clients recieved a diploma and the joy was all over their faces. They had survived the first night in what would become the biggest tourist attraction in Jukkasjärvi.

But let’s go back further than that. Yngve Bergqvist worked for a local folkore society. His love for nature and the clean water in the Torne river made him stay in Jukkasjärvi. Tourism was good over summer with activities like fishing, river rafting and canoeing but Yngve knew they needed something to make the winter season attractive too.

It wasn’t until a trip to Japan where Yngve got to see ice artists make all kinds of fabolous art with ice, that Yngve realized that there was this huge river that no one took advantage of during the winter. His goal was to make use of what nature and the surroundings offered.

The first ice seminar was held in 1989 and Yngve had invited two Japanese chefs and ice artists do teach the art of ice sculpting. In 1990 they had built their first snow house, a cottage of 60 square meters that held an art exhibition. In 1992 the first guests mentioned in the intro spent the night. The Ice Hotel was officially in business.

Each mid-November, when it starts getting cold, snow builders, architects, designers, and artists from all over the world gathers in Jukkasjärvi to start working on the ice hotel. Snow guns spray huge amounts of snow in to steel forms that are allowed to freeze and when removed leaves a maze of free-standing corridors of snow.

Each winter, the Ice Hotel borrows several hundred tons of ice from the Torne River. Yes, they borrow it, because when the season is over and the hotel starts melting, the water flows back in to the river.

The ice that is harvest is free of snow all winter, so that the ice can grow. Because it’s essential that the ice grow downwards, “That’s how we get the crystal-clear ice that has become the signature of the Ice Hotel,” Alf Kero says on the website.

The Ice Hotel has everything from a church to a bar. And yes, everything in the bar and church is made of ice. It’s a popular retreat for wedding couples to get married and spend their wedding night tucked in with a layer of fur. Maybe not the ultimate honeymoon night but definetly something to mention to the kids.

So if you ever come to Sweden during the cold winter be sure to travel up to Jukkasjärvi. It might be a far trip but it’s worth it. In the end, not everyone can say they have slept comfortable on ice.

This is it. The time has started for the fight of the Lightweight champion of the world, UFC 107. The two fighters are B.J Penn and Diego Sanchez, taking place at the FedEx Forum in Memphis Tennessee, “THE MAIN EVENT OF THE NIGHT” begins.

Sanchez opening with a fierce, ready to fight face, appeared to be ready for his opponent. With in second B.J. begin to move in on his rivial. backing him into a corner, he is able to block and with hold any punches or kicks being thrown at him from Sanchez. Not even a minute down in the first round a punch thrown by Penn sends Sanchez stumbling for his balance. Penn continued to nail right punches on Sanchez, putting him on his back and making it difficult to get back on his feet. Finally Sanchez gets up and tries to get strength and cordination back. penn slows his actions and the two close in on the end of the round.

The defending champion, B.J. began taking strikes and takedowns any oppertunity that arose while sanchez tried to keep up. At one point B.J. defended against Sanchez by pushing his down by his head and using his balance to remain standing. Sanchez showed his determination and refused to give up, all while his bruised and bloody face continue to pound. strikes and kicks were the least of what was to come next.

Towards the end of the final round, Penn yelled across the cage at Sanchez and he howled back. Penn took full throttle and used his full endurance-high-kick to Sanchez’s forehead, causing a gash to into the left side of his face. As the crowd watch the river or red flow all of the pentegon and around the two, the cageside physician finally put an end to the beating, at 2 min and 37 seconds in round 5.

We Are the Walking Corn

I got an interesting book from a corner of my friend’s apartment while she was moving out. It’s Michael Pollan’s book. It’s such a coincidence about Michael Pollan’s view, I read about this idea in Internet just before the school starts, the name of it is “We Are the Walking Corn”, but I can’t remember who brought this. In nowadays there are so many people talking about the food we eat, most of them are reminding us what we eat now is not healthy and we should diet now. Although Michael Pollan is talking about food either, but I like the way he brought his ideas to readers and gave his thoughts to us very considerately.
At the first chapter, Pollan use “Corn’s Conquest” to attract readers’ eyes. I think he use “Corn’s Conquest” not only just wants to attract readers humorously, but also is the respect to readers. I like to use some different start to make my reader curious about what I am going to say, because I think sometimes even you are publish your academic disquisition, you should still think about your reader and think if they can or want to accept your idea. Especially like Pollan’s book “a Natural History of Four Meals”, he actually want tell his reader about the natural science of our food, I think he must think a lot before he start to write: what way should I use to make the readers want to read and understand? The book we have read really can show his deep thoughts and the respect he put in it, and also we truly understand and use his thoughts in our life.
In my opinion, no matter in essay, story, or even fairy tale, the basic requires and aim is to make reader curious at first. I’m cry up to make reader curious and feel comfortable in academic papers, words are come out for read, not just lay on paper for bookshelf. Considerate writer is the responsible and respectable for reader.

Fall semester 09' at HPU

This fall 2009 semester at HPU has been tedious and very hectic, in the sense that I am both a college and an ROTC senior tackling various assignments all at once. I am taking four classes not including my Military Leadership class. I have piles of homework every week not any different from my other semesters, but demands more of my time and work effort (I, know you are probably thinking ‘welcome to college life’). I am looking forward to my last and final semester next year when I can eventually graduate and move on to greater things. The most challenging event for me this semester is swimming.
While I am enrolled HPU, I have to start swim classes as part of my military curriculum. I hated the water at first but as the semester went by I focused better and I am getting good at swimming. I had to balance my school work, Army, AROTC, Field Training Exercises, volunteer hours at Humane Society and my family which is still very challenging but doable. I love the three classes out of the four I am taking, but can’t wait for this semester to be over with. My long term goal after graduating from HPU next semester is to become a great leader – leading by example as an officer in the United States Army as my career advances.

One of My Favorite Movies of all time

One of my favorite movies of all times is “Pretty Women”, directed by Garry Marshall. It is a light, bubbly, romantic comedy. On a scale from 1-5 (five being the best), I rate this movie a five. I thought the acting was by both Richard Gere and Julia Roberts was exceptional. There was intense passion between them throughout the film, very convincing. “Pretty Women”, could be portrayed in different ways depends on the individual. One way could be the troubles dishes out normally, and then sends you a knight in shining armor that possibly may come rescue you. Personally, “Pretty Women”, reminds me of the well known fairy tale of “Cinderella”, different scenarios but the same theme of which both films relate.

Both tales share the story line of confident women working hard on every challenge life throws at her. Finally her day comes when a handsome man rescues her from that dark hole of misery, and whisks her away from all her past sufferings creating a brighter future for her. Cinderella’s life hadn’t gone exactly as she planned; she found herself in rags her whole life. “Pretty Women”, is a nineties version with a little less fiction (fairy god mother) and a lot more doze of reality.
Julia Roberts plays a prostitute named Vivian, her co-star Richard Gere is a successful corporate terminator named Edward Lewis. Their lives are worlds apart until they cross paths one night. In a matter of days Vivian goes from rags to riches, her new love Edward opens her eyes to the finer things life has to offer. Vivian’s free spirit challenges Edward’s strict, no non- sense, business minded approach to life. While working for Edwards, Vivian has fun, so much so she falls in love with him. When it came time for Vivian to leave, Edward offered her an apartment, clothes, happiness, all paid for if she stayed. Vivian refused and was disappointed in Edward’s poor decision to buy her the way he had everyone else being that he is a businessman.

Eventually, Edward understands that Vivian just wants his heart, and goes to rescue his love like the knight and shinning armor he is meant to be, not with his money, but with his heart. At the end, Vivian teaches him that love is the best investment he would ever make. The story plot of this film appeals to the emotion of the audience. Between the romance, greed, lust, and power of this film, the audience can relate with these typical issues.

Ninja Assassin - Movie Review

I went to see Ninja Assassin on Thanksgiving Day and rather unexpectedly too. And just as unexpectedly it was really, really good. Without giving away any plot spoilers the storyline does a pretty decent job of drawing you in to see what the main character (pictured to the left) is going to do next. He is a mysterious warrior that is depicted just another assassin until about the middle of the movie. One can also not forget the amount of blood in this film - there is just as much bloody scenes in this movie as Saw or Hostel or any other scary flick out there. Yet this movie is all about the Karate, Kung-Fu moves combined with some pretty intense action scenes. There are a few scenes that just seem to just be randomly thrown in, however with that said the majority of the movie was extremely enjoyable. I was entertained throughout the movie and definitely recommend this movie with two thumbs up. Hell, I may even buy the DVD when it's released.

Over Development = Pollution

Well I think that it is safe to say that the more we develop a place, the more pollution we add to the environment and it's creatures. We can't stop all development, but we sure can and should control it in a sustainable way. Hawaii has gone through many periods of heavy development and still continues to do so. Hawaii's development has been mainly responsible for Hawaii's pollution. Runoffs such as the Ala Wai Canal cause serious environmental issues including flesh eating bacteria in which we have to watch out for. As a surfer and fisherman, this is always a bummer. Most of the time I don't catch fish to eat but just for fun because a lot of the fish are contaminated from our pollution. This is hard to get used to coming from another island, on Kauai we can fish and surf without worries and it would be nice to keep it that way. Kauai is also going through a major development boom at the moment and has got many of the locals upset. Hundreds of new houses are being built on the south shore of the island as well as a shopping mall which will try and compete with our one and only existing mall. This is a major bummer to the locals of Kauai, not only has traffic rapidly gone up, but the majority of the new houses being built aren't gonna be occupied 90% of the year. These new homes that are being built are not like your regular little Hawaiian house, but rather big two story condos in private gated communities. Also most of the people that are buying the houses permanently live somewhere else in the world and buy them just for vacation homes. All of this new development doesn't just affect the locals with more visitors and structures, but it also greatly affects Kauai's environment. Please help control Hawaii's development.

The Argument about Religion

It really irritates me when the talk of religion comes up and people in their various
religions think every other person’s religion is not as good as theirs. I think to my self, are we?
not all worshiping the same God but going through different channels. I no longer argue
religion with people because I get all upset at the end of a conversation about religion and
someone makes an attempt to convert me to their religion. It is one of the most annoying
experiences I usually have because love is what the topic should be not judgments. It is, I
presume always going to be a topic of argument.
Religion generally seeks to discover values and to attract men through worship and
discipline. It is a complex part of life with rituals that keep order and stability in society. It is
about cosmic purpose, a powerful force and many have died for it. Only a few
have large following like Christianity, Moslems, Hinduism, Buddhism etc. There are others like
Eckankar, traditional worshipers (voodoo, juju worshipers, obanjai), Hericrishners etc. that
people don’t know a lot about but we are all worshipping the same God.
Man is made up of the spiritual and the physical sides: the religious and worldly. Some
religions believe in the supernatural and others refer to a type of living however, we
are all seeking a purpose for life. One thing people forget when they argue is the fact that
religion brings people together in a very diverse way.
In the cause of the argument I try to make people understand, it is not what religion you
belong to that makes you a better person for God is love and all is love. It is the tolerance for
religious beliefs other than one’s own. I don’t think anyone has the right to say which religion is
true while each may be convinced about the truth of his or her religion, trying to convert others
should be a encroachment of their individual violation. I respect other peoples religion and I
think every one else should too for we are all aiming to be better people in this life.

A little bit about Nigeria, The Land, The People
Before the creation of the now existing great West African Country called Nigeria;
various established indigenous systems of administration existed among the peoples. The
existing Empires and Kingdoms established contact with one another through trading activities.
Along comes the British; conquering the different parts of the present Nigeria, taking over total
control and authority, hence amalgamating and bring into existence the current country known as
Nigeria in1914. As time went on, the indigenous people stressed the need for self -government
thus the ‘struggle for freedom’ between 1922 and 1959 from British colonial rule.
The country became independent and self governing from British colonial rule on 1st
October 1960 and operates a federal system of government. During the First Republic as a
Parliamentary system of government, civilians ruled before the military intervention started in
1966. In the second Republic, Nigeria adopted the Presidential system of government like that of
the USA, consisting of Legislature, Judiciary and the Executive President as the Head of the
Federal Government. Military dominated power for close to 30 years with failed attempts of
civilian administration during elections between 1965 and 1983.The military still had control of
the country until May 29 1999; when the administration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo came in
office bringing about the restoration of democracy, and the slow but gradual transformation of a
new political reformation.
The country’s official name is the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It shares boundaries with
four Francophone countries: Republic of Cameroun to the east, Chad Republic to the northeast,
Niger Republic to the north, Republic of Benin to the west and the Bight of Benin and the Bight
of Bonny in the Atlantic Ocean to the South. Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa. The
population is estimated at over 130million, with an annual growth rate of 2.8% per annum.
Abuja, a recently built administrative city (since the last capital – Lagos became over populated),
serves as the capital in an area known as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). There are 36 states
and 774 local government areas including the FCT in the Nigerian federation.
Today, Nigeria is giant oil producing country rich with other natural resources like coal,
tin, petroleum crude oil, coal, tin, columbite, palm oil, peanuts, cotton, rubber, wood, hides and
skins, textiles, cement and other construction materials, food products, footwear, chemicals,
fertilizer, printing, ceramics, steel just to name a few. She has had her series of trials and
tribulations being a young independent country in a process of eliminating political corruption
that has been in existence since the beginning of British rule.

U.N. Climate Conference 2009

We all agree that there has to be a major change in the way the humanity lives and uses the resources our planet has provided us. So far, 100 country leaders from all over the world are scheduled to assist a historic Climate Conference which will take place at the Bella Center in Copenhagen, Denmark, between December 7 and December 18, 2009.

This year should be a big step to progress, because for the first time in history, China and its Premier, Wen Jiabao will attend a climate summit conference and recognize that this country needs and wants to cut its carbon-dioxide emissions by at least 40-45 percent by year 2020.

China's position on this matter, has changed dramatically over the past few years; from being blind to "Global Green Movement" to finally agreeing to make the first step towards the change and preservation of a healthy environment.

These words of wisdom should not only be heard, but also lead to some major change and action by the world's two biggest leaders and greenhouse gas producers; the U.S and China. Hopefully these two countries will take a full responsibility for their actions and decrease their contribution to major emissions of carbon-dioxide which destroys the ozone layer around our planet and harms our health as well as our environment.

"Opportunity is knocking. It is up to you to open the door," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement Monday. "We must seize this opportunity to create a safer and more prosperous future for all, to reduce the emissions that are causing climate change and to help the most vulnerable adapt to impacts that are already under way.''

It is Thanksgiving today for all people in the United states and Canada. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!!! Today, let's not only enjoy and stuff ourselves with food, but also give aloha by sharing food with less fortunate ones.

Charity has always played a big role in Thanksgiving and the purpose of this holiday's celebration. It started back when the Wampanoag (Native Americans) taught the Pilgrims how to plant food and build shelters in the hostile, cold land of Massachussetts. This expression of aloha and hospitality was the reason Thanksgiving was created and ever since that moment people should remember why we must always give to those who are empty handed or alone in this world.

Joel Centeio Wins Reef Hawaiian Pro

It was an exciting and well deserved journey to victory for one of the best surfers that Hawaii has to offfer. Joel Centeio won $20.000 at the Reef Hawaiian Pro 2009 contest this last Monday, November 23rd. If he accomplishes his dream and wins the Vans Triple Crown series title, he could add another $50.000 to his bank account plus a $10.000 watch, courtesy of Nixon.

Whoever had a chance to check out the contest on its final day, felt the cheery atmosphere as Joel kept winning all seven rounds he contested in and getting barreled with style at his home break at Ali'i Beach Park in Haleiwa. Joel, 26, beat solid, tough contestants from all around the world, such as Florida's Cj Hobgood who came in second place, Australia's Jay Thompson who came in 3rd and Tahiti's Alan Riou, who came in 4th place.

It's been an hectic season for many of the college teams this year, including out locally supported UH warriors. two years ago, with an undefeated team and new head coach, the warriors played the UGA bulldogs in the sugar bowl. Unfortunately the warriors lost and since then, has been defeated more times than expected. will the warriors come together and make it to another big bowl? Black Friday is synonomous with bargain deals and discounts up the wazoo. Especaially in today's economy you can bet your piggy bank that consumers will be looking for those killer deals. This months Black Friday will land the day after thanksgiving and hordes of shoppers will be lining the streets for those advertised deals. Sears will have a 40-inch 1080p LCD HDTV for only $599.99 or even a 5.8-cubic foot dryer pair for $579.98. Many other department stores have such scandalously low deals for this day, and in fact many businesse's rely on this day and the rest of the holiday season (a 1-month time span) for over half of their revenue for the entire year. However what's so raw about these so-called deals? Does "Limited Quantities" or "While Supplies Last" or "Minimum 2 per Store" ring a bell?

It's a rather shady scheme to advertise (many of these ad's go out on newspapers, online ads, and tv spots) to millions of people and yet these huge departement stores may only have 2 or 3 of these items but have a HUGE spot in the paper advertising about them. It's a misleading and under-handed practice that needs to be corrected.

Vans Triple Crown of Surfing

Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is one of the most important professional surfing events happening right here, on the North Shore of Oahu. It's considered to be second only to surfing's world title and it is the ultimate test for any male or female surfer to master all three events and prove his or her ability in riding big waves at three different locations, all with different challenges.

Reef Hawaiian Pro is the first of these specialty events and it's being held on November 12-24 at Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park. If you are a surfer, a surfing devotee or just live on Oahu, but have never been to the North Shore, you should hurry up and come watch The Vans Triple Crown. It's the most exciting time of the year for the North Coast visitors because of all the upcoming winter swells and exciting surfing events. Hopefully I will see you guys there.

Some cultural aspects of the African society includes but are not limited to patterns of identity, aspiration, symbolic meaning, coordination, traditional practices and relationships

between groups. Traditional Beliefs are still practiced in most countries; many African religions believed in an afterlife where the soul floated through eternity, communication between the living and the dead (communicating with spirits), movements representing spirits acting through humans. Most believed in a single creator, others believed in a pantheon of gods whose ancestors mattered in most societies.

Music plays a huge role in the world today and in the African communities. Music basically was for social rituals and also education; with wide variety of instruments and strong rhythmic pattern, integrated voice and instruments with audience participation often times as part of the music. Africans if you ask me, developed a variety of different artistic forms including pottery, weaving, beadwork, metalwork, and mask making. Most artwork produced extraordinarily made to honor their gods and ancestors.

Artworks, that is famous and well known with significance in the present world (Egypt). Every country in the world has an economy. People create economies through employment, trade, and the buying and selling of goods. Today ,in the African culture, natural resources such as crude oil, coal, palm oil, gold, diamond, peanuts, cotton, rubber, wood, corn, rice, millet, cassava, and yams just to name a few are exported. Many men are employed as farmers. Women are responsible for selling goods at the markets. The goods that they produce are made to be used and also have great artistic value in the world as a whole.

When love comes knocking on your door steps, the heart often does not recognize skin color,

religion language, or race. When that special someone comes sweeping into your life, and you

realize you're in love, nothing else seems to matter.

Intercultural relationships have always been a point of family controversy I came to find

out soon after being in one; and people often look sideways at interracial couples in public

settings. An intercultural relationship will most likely face at least some external pressure; I often

notice. Perhaps older family members will be uncomfortable when they see who an individual is

bringing to dinner. And parts of the society may show a certain amount of narrow-mindedness

regarding intercultural relationships.

Being in an Intercultural marriage myself; from a different country, a different race, speak a

different language, and practice a different religion, my union with my husband posses a

challenge almost everyday. On the positive side, however, we have patience and perseverance,

for me that is immensely rewarding and deeply fulfilling. Our different cultural back grounds

keeps our married life interesting and offers numerous opportunities for personal awareness,

growth and learning. And on a more inspirational point, our union is a beautiful and harmonious

opportunity to enhance global acceptance, cultural integration and serene coexistence.

The new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 came out Monday November 9, 2009, however at least a million + players got to play the game way before the release date. How is this possible? It’s simple – online piracy. Hardy har har! Monitoring all digital files that are available by the authorities is near to impossible – there are over 4 billion web pages currently (more are added daily, besided being edited on a regular basis). For the players who were kicked its unknown as of yet if they will be allowed back on to the Xbox Live network. (The reason to be on the Xbox Live network is because it is an entertainment hub. Besides being able to play online with your friends/strangers you can download new content for your games, watch videos including recently released movies from Netflix, and even chat online with other people.) Currently there are over 20 million members on Xbox Live. For those who have been booted its because they broke their agreement with Microsoft (the owners of the Xbox 360 Live network) by modifying their systems to play pirated games. Now even though these kicked players can no longer play online – they can still enjoy their pirated versions offline in the single player campaigns. For the developers this is still a kick in the pants, it costed the development team millions just to make the game and these “pirates” are enjoying the fruits of their labors for free. Online file-sharing/piracy is a huge problem is this era of digital freedom – only time will tell what the solution will be.

yankees win the 105 world series

A season of redemption came to its conclusion on Wednesday night, Novermber 6, 2009. The Yankees, who beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-3, in Game 6 of the series. The game earned the Yankees their 27th championship of the 105th World Series, ending the hard work nine years in the making. Hideki Matsui led the Yankees’ offense with a record-tying night. Hideki had a home run, a double, a single and six runs batted in. While Andy Pettitte, handled the pitching chores after taking three days of rest, preparing for the game. Pettitte threw five, almost six solid innings that resulted in three runs and four hits for the Phillies. Yankees Manager Joe Girardi won his first world series in 31 years. After the game he was questioned for going with a three-man rotation in the postseason. But it worked perfectly as the Yankees went 11-4 and outplayed the opposing Phillies. Alex Rodriguez, who was critized and questions earlier for his abilities postseason, won his first world series championship. A-Rod carried the Yankees through the first two rounds of the playoffs and remained positive and encouraging through the end.The on-field celebration of the Yankees’ 7-3 victory was properly covered by Fox as a team event. there were very few photos of the crowd and fans during the win. After Shane Victorino grounded out to end the game, Fox showed the excited Yankees who gathered and jumped in the infield. They were seen from 10 different angles before the first showing of the Phillies were shown. the players on the Phillies, sat in the dugout with blank and stright stares to the realization of the game. Finally, Fox showed the individual players reaction through players such as Derek Jeter, A-Rod, Mariano Rivera, and Jorge Posada.

Chinatown - the alternative to Waikiki

Waikiki is seen as the premiere tourist spot. I think that Chinatown is becoming, if not already is, the destination for an entertainment alternative to Waikiki. Located three blocks away from Bishop street it's centrally located and has many, many events happening weekly. (In fact tonight November 6, 2009 is 1st Friday a huge get together of local artists (paintings, crafts, etc.) which I am taking a mini-video and will blog about later.) There is the Indigo's, Bar 39 , Soho to name a few bars and many local artists shops in the area. Local artists have mixed media festivals, dancers, and bands come to perform and show off their

talents. If your looking for something different than what you would get in Waikiki, Chinatown is deftinitely worth taking a look at.

Ft. Hood Shootings

On Thursday November 5, 2009 the worst massacre in history on an army base occurred. Thirteen people were killed and over thirty other individuals were injured as well. No, this was not a terrorist attack - it was the action (a throurough investigation into the matter is still being investigated) of an army psychiatrist, the suspected shooter who suffered was taken down by a civilian police officer by the name of Kimberly Munley. To see a live report on the shootings go to Ft. Hood Shooting Clip. While the investigation is still under the story has captured even President Obama's attention, Obama Interest. Nothing is known as of yet of the why Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the suspected shooter who has been hospitilized after receiving gun shot wounds, went on his rampage. What I really think of Tobacco
I have only recently noticed that there are not a lot of commercials out there for tobacco as there was five to ten years ago. Now, more than ever, more and more people are beginning to look at tobacco use as a major public health concern. In this year, 2009, the number of smokers is rising while the average age of smoking initiation decreases. Although, of recent, the banning of smoking inside of buildings, has created a reduction of people smoking due to the inconveniencing factor of stepping outside to light one up. There are those that believe using tobacco of any type should be illegal, or at least restricted. In my opinion, not bashing the smokers, I think it was a great idea to ban smoking in buildings because second hand smoking has reduced drastically. I, support the idea of increasing taxes on smoking - smoking if you ask me is a waste of valuable money- that is spent on killing one’s self slowly but then again my friends who smoke say people have to die some day. While some believe it is up to the person to choose whether to use tobacco products or not, other people believe tobacco companies should warn their customers of serious harmful effects of the product. One thing is for sure, despite the prohibitions placed on tobacco people will still smoke and waste their money on tobacco.

ONE OF THE SCARRIEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME!
With halloween right around the corner, alot of horro movies are flourishing theatres. while hawaii is well know for its partying and fun around this time of year, halloween always means haunted houses and horror stories that send chills to people who dare to tangle with them. one of the most watched film in the movies right now is paranormal activity (rated R).
this movie is very similar to the popular production "the blair witch project".

the film is about a young couple who is middle class and just moved into their starter home. after moving the couple begins to notcie noise, demonic or not, that seem violent and disruptive. the couple become more and more firghtening and disturbed by the unknown presents that the begin to seek help for it. most of the activity is not witness through sight because it is usually present during the night, when most people are sleeping. the sounds and movements are so loud they are often awaken from deep sleep to the slamming of doors and foot stomps. The couple believes the "spirit" is demonic and there to harm them, they begin to fear for their lives, especially when they are sleeping.

Paramount Pictures Presents A Blumhouse Production Film by Oren Peli called “Paranormal Activity”. their are only 5 actors in this film, the girlfriend and haunted, Katie Featherston, the boyfriend Micah Sloat, the Psycic Mark Fredrichs, and Amber Armstrong and Ashley Palmer. The film was directed, written and edited by Oren Peli. Producers, Jason Blum and Oren Peli only spent 15,000 dollars shooting, editing and creating the film, with co-producers Toni Taylor and Amir Zbeda. The executive producer is Steven Schneider.

Scenes with filled with horror and fear, that is it almost impossible to not be scarred of the unknown. if you dare to watch this terrifying flick that has numerous people around america scarred to sleep at night. rather you believe in the demonic spirits or thinks its a fluke, the fottage and situations that occur are enough to keep you thinking if your REALLY the only one in the room at night.

Being in the army and training as a leader, values and ethics tend to play a big role in way of thinking. Values and ethics are central to any organization; the army is no exception. In my opinion, ethics is an extremely broad topic, in terms of strategic decisions, leaders and decision makers. The distinctive nature of ethics influences the ethical behavior of individuals in organizations such as the army. What we eventually decide and our actions implored as leaders can make or build ethical climates as leaders.
My husband and I just moved to Wahiawa, to the Military housing but far away from school. We settled in pretty quickly into the neighborhood, and it just happens, him being in the Navy, his boat is always gone. The housing is nice but has no AC or central air just windows so we are forced to leave our windows open. We moved next to a man and his two dogs in the Marines. The neighborhood is nice and quiet but it turns he is not. He wakes up at all odd hours of the night and decides to talk on the phone in front of his door.
It started off not being a problem but being a light sleeping person, I tend to wake up to the sound of his loud obnoxious voice in the middle of the night. This disturbs the rest of my sleep since it takes me a few minutes to get back to sleep. I have to wake up at about 4am every morning depending on how early the training for the day is. The rest of the day I feel my sleep is disturbed because of my neighbors phone calls. His dogs are the loudest in neighborhood and that does not seem to bother him. They bark at everything and sound they hear. Being right next to him, it starts my dogs off to barking too. When he is home, he casually tells them to stop by that time I am already awake even on the weekends. Two weeks after moving in, I ran into my next door neighbor, actually held a conversation with him and found some very interesting things about him.
His name is Chris, an E6 in the Marines going on 10years. He has just returned from a recent tour- his 5th tour so far. He is in the middle of a nasty divorce, custody of his two daughters and tried to commit suicide twice. He wakes up in the middle night – to sounds that sound similar to when he was deployed. He shot a child with Improvised Explosive Device close to his oldest daughter’s age that still haunts and taunts his dreams. He goes to therapy 5 days a week because of the suicide attempt he had pulled. He does not appear distant or distressed, but happy and smiley most times when I run into him.
My ethical problem is the phone calls and inconsideration of the dog barks that wake me up in the middle of the night. The rest of my working and school day, I look and feel as though I have not had any type of sleep. The two contradicting values I find myself in are my empathy (for all the stressful events going on in the life of my neighbor) and duty (to my myself and dedicating the best potential I have – working effectively and efficiently to achieve what is expected of me).
I came to a realization that my respect for this Marine who has gone through so much is more important than my complaint. Sacrificing a little bit of sleep sucks especially when I don’t know this person but I look at it as doing it for a good cause. If that helps him not to lose his mind, then so be it, I can always wear ear plugs to sleep until he gets it all off his chest. Someday I am hoping he will and I will get my full sleep once again but until then I am helping a fellow Soldier (Marine) piece his life back together.

Hey everyone, this is Simon Sakai and I would like to tell you a little about a very interesting girl that I interviewed the other day. Her name is Gali Sanchez and she was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. She really enjoyed growing up on an island and would never change where she’s from. Gali isn’t a big fan of loud noises and definitely prefers the country lifestyle over city living, she just loves nature. Gali decided to come to Hawaii for school and due to its similar island lifestyle as the Caribbean. She has now been attending HPU for over three years and has chosen Multimedia as her major. Her plans after school entail working somewhere in the U.S.A. or the Dominican Republic. Gali’s favorite Caribbean foods are moro de guandule, chicken or beef stew, and potato salad. When I asked her to describe a perfect day at the beach in the Dominican Republic she replied “ clear water, blue skies, presidente beers, fish, friends and plantains”. Sounds like a really nice time. Gali is a very fun and adventurous girl who loves to work out and pick shells in her free time and is always down for a great time, so if you see her around be sure to say hi!

What is happening around the world

Searching globalvoicesonline.org, I was fascinated at the big deal Egypt made about President Barack Obama being honored the Nobel price during wartime. Some view points from people’s comments seem to think he received it due to his promise rather than his performance. Mixed feelings about the President on whether or not he should receive this price due to unfulfilled promises such as the closing of the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba being viewed as a source of much distaste for the U.S, ending the Iraq war, and assimilating his task and deadline for January 2010 might very well not take place. Although pushing for peace between Israelis and Palestinians with no success yet, he seems to strive more for world peace, if you as me its his efforts that have earned him that award. Just like any other President, his views and administration is criticized.

Another remarkable headline was the controversial banning of Niqab (face cover) by the Egyptian Imam (Al Azhar) which all starting with a 13 year old girl during class. It strikes me as interesting when she was told to take it off since she is sitting with other females colleagues in class. Just as he explained the face cover is tradition and custom not necessarily part of Islam. It makes sense being from another country myself we tend to over do these customs and tradition, some which are not written in stone such as still in this present day, women being second class citizens. I really liked that article for me; it means these developing countries are coming around. I am not saying change traditions and customs but leave room for changes.

The birth of cinema came in the late 1800s and Film Industry as we know today is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the world. People like entertainment and movies are entertainment. Movies are just like books, only they're visual. People like seeing other people cast in roles, and playing out a story. People also love the gossip, delving into the lives of these cast, often carrying out after the roles of the character seen. Being a visual communication major, I have come to appreciate the making of movies. It is not as easy as it seems. Movies are a creation and combination of people; actors and actresses, stories, along with background music, special effects, and overall satisfaction within a 2 hour or less period of time. Movies tend to take an individual to real physical locations, sometimes touching home for them as part of the stream of life. This I believe is the ideal reason why people love watching television.

Tourists are attracted to Hawaii because of its natural beauty of greenness, beaches,
wealth of culture and most likely the Polynesian culture. Some people feel the
Islands have become too over-developed, commercialized, and lost that special "aloha spirit."
Waikiki has turned into streets jammed with cars, sidewalks filled with people, street
marketers, and tourists with strange behavior. Hawaii is no longer the same from when business started; the downfall of the economy is not helping either and so far the rise of inflation looks bad on small business owners

My name is Lydia Stinson; I am a senior and a Visual Communication major at Hawaii Pacific University. I was born on October 08, in Portharcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria (West Africa). I have two older siblings who reside in Virginia, my younger brother attends college in Nigeria and the baby of the family, my younger sister, attends college in the United Kingdom. I am married to an awesome man, Joshua P. Stinson, who is currently serving in the United States Navy. After being engaged for a year we decided to get married, we have been married for six years. I have two gorgeous dogs that help keep me fit from running with them around the block. I would like to think I am an outgoing, open minded person who loves life and shopping.
